Funeral poems for grandmothers

Published: 28/6/2023

Losing a grandmother is one of life's deeply emotional experiences that can leave us feeling at a loss of words. Grandmothers hold such a special place in the family unit, sharing warmth and love to all. It's only natural then, to want to express our deep affection and gratitude for the influential role they played in our lives. Thankfully, funeral poems help provide a precious opportunity to capture the essence of their spirit and the influential impact they had on us.

We hope our collection of poems for grandmothers help guide you to find the perfect words to honour and preserve her memory, commemorating her remarkable presence in the most meaningful of ways possible.

Poems for Grandmothers

What is a Grandma?

A Grandma is one of life's best gifts,

Someone to treasure all life through,

She's caring and loving,

Thoughtful and true,

Someone who is always a special part of your life,

Someone who holds a prime place in your heart,

She's a mentor, a confident and also a friend,

Someone on whose love you can depend.

A Grandma always has your best interests at heart,

She's someone so dear and so good,

She's a blessing, she's a gift, She's a treasure like no other,

She's someone that is truly wonderful.

Wherever you go, and whatever you do,

A Grandma's love will always see you through,

A Grandma is truly invaluable, Indispensable and unforgettable.

I wouldn't want anyone but you,

And that's why I'm so grateful, that life picked you for me.

A Grandmother's love - Colleen M Loader

A Grandmother's love is like a river

It flows through the fabric of our lives

Quenching our thirst for comfort

And acceptance.

It may ebb and flow but never runs dry.

The memory of this love stays with us

It brings peace and acceptance gently ebbing into the banks of our daily lives

Rushing over the rapids of our grief.

Never ending or beginning but a constant source of comfort in our memories

Gone From Us - Author Unknown

Gone from us that smiling face,

The cheerful pleasant ways,

The heart that won so many friends,

In bygone, happy days.

A life made beautiful by kindly deeds,

A helping hand for others' needs.

To a beautiful life,

Comes a happy end,

She died as she lived,

Everyone's friend.

Legacy of Love - Author Unknown

A wife, a mother, a grandma too,

This is the legacy we have from you.

You taught us love and how to fight

You gave us strength, you gave us might.

A stronger person would be hard to find,

And in your heart you were always kind.

You fought for us all in one way or another

Not just as a wife not just as a mother.

For all of us you gave your best

And now the time has come for you to rest.

So go in peace, you've earned your sleep,

Your love in our hearts we'll eternally keep.

Grandma

You fed me well, you made me strong.

You taught me to know right from wrong.

You made me feel that I belong.

You showed me the value of a song.

You gave me life, you gave me love.

You always knew the way I feel.

You used the words you thought might heal.

You convinced me it was no big deal.

Your advice would keep it real.

You gave me life, you gave me love.

Broken hearts you liked to mend.

It was not in your nature to offend.

Birthday cards you'd always send.

You knew the value of family and friends.

You give me life, you give me love.

You left me now, you've gone away.

I'm left behind, I have to stay.

So I'll just have to pray.

I'll meet you again another day.

You always had that 'special touch'.

I loved you so very, very much.

You gave me life, you gave me love.

Please watch over me from above.

GrandMother

She was mother

Grandmother

And great grandmother

And so much more

She gave life

She gave love

And she gave friendship

And so much more

This family

Gathered in this place today

Would be nothing without her

Without her some of us

Would be less

Than a passing dream

Which is why we honour her spirit

Her love Her knowledge

And her wisdom

This great journey - Yours and mine

Will never end- It may divert

And for a while- We may lose

Fellow travellers.

Just for a moment- A blink in time

But we will always travel With soul companions

Those we love.

We, her children

Her grandchildren

Great grandchildren

And her friends

Have been given

Her power

Her love

And so we thank her

And those that created her

If flowers grow in heaven,

Lord, then pick a bunch for me.

Then place them in my grandmother's arms

and tell her they're from me.

Tell her that I love and miss her

and when she turns to smile,

place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile.

A Grandmother's Love Never Fades - Amelia Vandergast

The smell of your perfume

your favourite song on the radio

it all brings me back to you.

When my eyes were brand-new

you were keen to show me the world

the sights I would see were more than just images in the periphery

they rooted in my mind as my fondest memory.

I recall them when the world seems too much

or just when I miss your touch

your soft embraces

your love left traces of you inside me.

I wish I could have known you for longer

I wish I could have known you when you were younger

every second with you made me stronger.

Your love is unforgettable

it still grows each day

you live inside of me

even if you're not around

to take pride in me.

To Those Whom I Love and Those Who Love Me - Mary Alice Ramish

When I am gone, release me, let me go

I have so many things to see and do

You must not tie yourself to me with tears

Be happy that I have had so many years

I gave you my love, you can only guess

How much you gave me in happiness

I think you for the love each have shown

But now it is time I traveled on alone

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must

Then let your grief be comforted by trust

It is only for a while that we must part

So bless the memories in your heart

I will not be far away, for life goes on

So if you need me, call and I will come

Though you can not see or touch me,

I will be near And if you listen with your heart, you will hear

All of my love around you soft and clear

Then, when you must come this way alone

I will greet you with a smile and a "Welcome Home"

The Watcher

She always leaned to watch for us

Anxious if we were late,

In winter by the window,

In summer by the gate.

And though we mocked her tenderly

Who had such foolish care,

The long way home would seem more safe,

Because she waited there.

Her thoughts were all so full of us,

She never could forget,

And so I think that where she is

She must be watching yet.

Waiting 'til we come home to her

Anxious if we are late

Watching from Heaven's window

Leaning from Heaven's gate.

Your Spirit - Tram-Tiara T. Von Reichenbach

I know that no matter what

You will always be with me.

When life separates us

I'll know it is only your soul

Saying goodbye to your body

But your spirit will be with me always.

When I see a bird chirping on a nearby branch

I will know it is you singing to me.

When a butterfly brushes gently by me so care freely

I will know it is you assuring me you are free from pain.

When the gentle fragrance of a flower catches my attention

I will know it is you reminding me

To appreciate the simple things in life.

When the sun shining through my window awakens me

I will feel the warmth of your love.

When I hear the rain pitter patter against my window sill

I will hear your words of wisdom

And will remember what you taught me so well'

That without rain trees cannot grow

Without rain flowers cannot bloom

Without life's challenges I cannot grow strong.

When I look out to the sea I will think of your endless love for your family.

When I think of mountains, their majesty and magnificence

I will think of your courage for your country.

No matter where I am,

Your spirit will be beside me,

For I know that no matter what,

You will always be with me.

When I'm Gone - Lyman Hancock

When I come to the end of my journey

And I travel my last weary mile

Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned

And remember only the smile

Forget unkind words I have spoken

Remember some good I have done

Forget that I ever had heartache

And remember I've had loads of fun

Forget that I've stumbled and blundered

And sometimes fell by the way

Remember I have fought some hard battles

And won, ere the close of the day

Then forget to grieve for my going

I would not have you sad for a day

But in summer just gather some flowers

And remember the place where I lay

And come in the shade of evening

When the sun paints the sky in the west

Stand for a few moments beside me

And remember only my best

A Grandmother Just like you - Author unknown

I just want to let you know

You mean the world to me

Only a heart as dear as yours

Would give so unselfishly

The many things you've done

All the times you were there

Help me know deep down inside

How much you really care

Even though I might not say

I appreciate all you do

Richly blessed is howI feel

Having a grandmother just like you

Memories in The Heart - Author unknown

Feel no guilt in laughter, she knows how much you care

Feel no sorrow in a smile that she's not here to share.

You cannot grieve forever, she would not want you to.

She'd hoped you can carry on, the way you always do.

So talk about the good times and the way you showed you cared

The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared.

Let memories surround you,

A word someone may say

Will suddenly recapture a time, an hour, a day

That brings her back as clearly as though she was here

And fills you with the feelings that she is always near

For if you keep these moments, you will never be apart

And she will live forever, locked safe within your heart

My Life Journey - Author unknown

I believe I am the person I am today because of the struggles in my past.

I believe at times on my life journey, I have been misplaced but never lost the real essence of me.

I believe every obstacle put in my path has made me stronger.

I believe I now have the confidence and ability to do and achieve all my goals.

I believe I have not made mistakes in my life, I have just learned valuable lessons,

I believe, even in times of chaos and crisis I can still laugh.

I believe even when I feel my heart is about to break it just finds more love and forgiveness in it.

I believe through my hardships I have found wonderful and loyal friends.

I believe I deserve to be loved for the wonderful beautiful person I am.

I believe no matter how bad things are in my life there is always someone worse off than me.

I believe if I stay true to my beliefs, no one can hurt me as I am being true to myself.

A Winner's Creed -  Author Unknown.

If you think you are beaten you are.

If you think you dare not, you don't.

If you'd like to win, but think you can't.

It's almost a cinch you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you've lost

For out in the world we find

success begins with the person's faith,

it all in the state of mind

life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster hand,

they go to the one that trusts in God,  And always thinks I can"

Never goodbye - John F. Connor

Wherever you go, whatever you do

I will be there, standing by you.

In good times and bad,

I will be there I won't go

For I love you, more than you'll ever know.

The love that we had, lives beyond death

Love does not end, with the last breath.

Love is forever it will not go away

I will be there, in the night in the day.

Search in your heart and you will see

With every beat, you will know it is me.

No you won't see me, no you won't hear

But your heart will tell you, that I am always near.

I never left you so please don't cry

This is 'see you later', there is never goodbye.

When I'm Gone

When I come to the end of my journey, and I travel my last weary mile,

Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned, and remember only the smile.

Forget unkind words I have spoken; Remember some good I have done,

Forget that I ever had heartache, and remember I've had loads of fun.

Forget that I've stumbled and blundered, and sometimes fell by the way.

Remember I have fought some hard battles, and won, ere the close of the day.

Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day.

Come to Me

God saw you were getting tired,

And a cure was not to be,

So he put his arms around you,

And whispered, "Come to Me."

With tearful eyes we watched you,

And saw you pass away.

Although we loved you dearly,

We could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,

Hard working hands at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us,

He only takes the best.

Do Not Stand

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep,

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond's gift of snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain

, I am the autumn's gentle rain,

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush.

Of quiet birds in circled flight,

I am the soft stars that shine at night,

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there, I did not die.

Remember Me

Remember me when flowers bloom early in the spring

Remember me on sunny days in the fun that summer brings

Remember me in the fall as you walk through leaves of gold

And remember me in the wintertime in the stories that are told

But most of all remember Each day, right from the start

I will be forever near

For I live within your heart

Remember Me - Christina Rossetti

Remember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land;

When you can no more hold me by the hand,

Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day

You tell me of the future that you planned;

Only remember me; you understand

It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while

And afterwards, remember,do not grieve:

For if the darkness and corruption leave

A vestige of the thoughts that I once had,

Better by far that you should forget

And smile than that you should

Remember and be sad.

A Wonderful Grandmother - Author unknown

We had a wonderful grandmother

One who never really grew old

Her smile was made of sunshine

And her heart was solid gold

Her eyes were bright as shining stars

And in her cheeks fair roses you see.

We had a wonderful grandmother,

And that's the way it will always be.

But take heed, because

She's still keeping an eye on all of us,

So let's make sure

She will like what she sees.

The Watcher -Anne Widdemer

Her thoughts were all so full of us,

She could never forget!

And so I think that where she is

She must be watching yet.

God Looked Around His Garden

God looked around his garden

And found an empty place

He then looked down upon the earth

And saw your tired face

He put his arms around you

And lifted you to rest.

God's garden must be beautiful,

He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering

He knew you were in pain

He knew that you would never

Get well on earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough

And the hills were hard to climb.

So he closed your weary eyelids

And said, "Peace be thine".

It broke our hearts to lose you

But you didn't go alone.

For part of us went with you

The day God called you home.

You've Just Walked On Ahead of Me - Joyce Grenfell

You've just walked on ahead of me

And I've got to understand

You must release the ones you love

And let go of their hand.

I try and cope the best I can

But I'm missing you so much

If I could only see you

And once more feel your touch.

Yes, you've just walked on ahead of me

Don't worry I'll be fine

But now and then I swear

I feel your hand slip into mine.

She Is Gone - David Harkins

You can shed tears that she is gone

Or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back

Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her

Or you can be full of the love you shared

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday

Or you can be happy for tomorrow, because of yesterday

You can remember her and only that she's gone

Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back

Or you can do what she'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on
