My Tributes is  Australia's most reputable platform, offering a comprehensive resource to locate funeral and death notices and obituaries, dating back to 1991. You can identify death notices, whether online or in print, by name, location or classification.   

In this article, we'll walk you through the process step by step, so you can navigate the platform with ease and find the meaningful notices you're seeking.

Find notices in the newspaper

You can find recent local death notices in your community's newspapers. If the family of the deceased opts for it, a death notice may appear in the newspaper of their choice. If your local community newspaper no longer prints, you can usually access local death notices within most major state newspapers. You'll also find each day's death notices curated within the My Tributes section of News Corp's Australian metro newspapers. 

View notices online 

Every death notice showcased in the newspaper is also accessible on mytributes.com.au. To explore all My Tributes death notices:   

  • Head to mytributes.com.au and select "Notices" from the top panel.
  • Choose "View Death Notices." This action will lead you to a catalogue of all current death notices, arranged chronologically.

Once you've located the death notice you were searching for, click on it to access the tribute page. Here, you'll find a collection of heartfelt messages, memories and condolences from friends and family. 

View all death and funeral notices in your area

  • Visit mytributes.com.au and input your location in the search bar.
  • You can further refine or broaden your search by specifying your preferred kilometre radius in the accompanying search filter bar. 

  If you wish to only view death or funeral notices, you can designate your preference for category here as well. After selecting "Go," you will gain access to a listing of all existing notices within your region, organised by date.  

Alternatively, local death and funeral notices can still be located in your community's newspaper. In the event that your local newspaper is no longer in publication, these notices can be traced within your state newspaper. Online, via your state or local newspaper's website, you can freely peruse death and funeral notices in your vicinity by navigating to the "Tributes & Notices" tab in the top left hand corner.

Find a specific death notice 

  • Visit mytributes.com.au.
  • Go to "Notices" then "death notices"
  • Enter the surname of the deceased in the search bar.

You can further streamline your search by appending the location in the menu. Upon selecting "Go," you'll gain access to a compilation of all current notices linked to that surname, systematically ordered by date.

Find a historical notices online

My Tributes' archive of death, funeral and tribute notices dates back to 1991. After you use the search methods above, you can find a "Filter" button with three lines next to "Go" . This button allows you to add filters, allowing you to search within the date range of your choosing and or publication too.  

To find more historical notices, there are many family-tree tracing services available that have a range of historical notices on file in order to help trace back family lineages.   

State Governments also have access to historical records that can be accessed in person or online either through State or National libraries or through your State Government's website. You can also find historical notices archived in the Ryerson Index online.
