St Ann's College is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Rosemary Moore on August 27th. Dr Moore was actively engaged with supporting St Ann’s College through her roles on the St Ann’s College Council (for periods April 1981-November 1981, and May 1983 – December 2016), the House Committee (which she joined in 1985, and held the role of Chair from May 1986 – December 2016), and the Education Committee. She was appointed a Fellow of the College in 2009.

Dr Rosemary (nee Sweetapple) Moore was a respected Senior Lecturer in English and Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide in the English Department. She was appointed to lectureship in 1965, one of only two females to hold substantive posts in her department for that first decade.

She taught courses in narrative with emphasis on the influence of gender on women writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She has published articles in this field and researched into the relations between psychoanalysis and feminist studies. She retired in 2008.

Dr Moore had a strong affection for Pekingese dogs after her father gave her one when she was a small child in South Africa. She was never without one since, having nine across her lifetime. One in particular developed quite a reputation as it continued to quietly snore its way through meetings, research seminars, and tutorials, until a ‘pet policy’ banned it from the Napier building!

Dr Moore was married to Professor Robin Moore, who held roles as an author, a scholar, a lecturer and the Head of the History Department at Flinders University. Robin passed away in 2009.

The College will cherish the memories of Dr Moore’s visits and participation in events such as Founders Day and Friends of the College Luncheons. We are so grateful for her selfless dedication to the College over a very long period of time.
