The Language of Us
Doris Falidis-Nickolas’ poetry beautifully captures love, loss, and remembrance, offering comfort to those navigating grief.
BATE Professor Weston Bate OAM In 1968 the Council of Geelong Grammar School commissioned Weston, an established historian who at that time had no personal connection with the School (though for some years a teacher at Bishop Perry's parallel Anglican foundation of the 1850s, Melbourne Grammar School), to write its history. With help over the next two decades from research assistants, particularly Fay Marles AM and Jane Carolan OAM, and others, he wrote 'Light Blue Down Under' (published in 1990) which chronicles and interprets our story until 1980. It remains a prime source for those interested in the history not only of the School but also of education in Victoria. In the process he and his wife, Janice (herself daughter of a great Anglican headmaster, Canon St John Wilson of Brighton Grammar School), became good friends of many in our community; and Weston retained his keen interest in our fortunes. His friendliness and almost boyish enthusiasm and warmth of heart and manner helped make him a very welcome member of our GGS community. We send this assurance of our gratitude and loving thoughts to Janice and their family. Christus nobis factus Sapientia
