The Language of Us
Doris Falidis-Nickolas’ poetry beautifully captures love, loss, and remembrance, offering comfort to those navigating grief.
CARBOON, Joan (née Neill)
Our darling mother Joan was born in Swan Hill on February 3rd, 1927, the only child of Elizabeth (Isla, nee Burroughs) and Thomas Neill. In 1953, she married our father Laurie and they raised their family in Surrey Hills. Sadly, Laurie passed away at age 63.
During WWII Joan served with the Women’s Royal Australian Navy and later worked in clothing industry until her retirement at age 70. Joan, ever curious travelled widely and made friends easily right up until the last weeks of her life. We’ve all inherited her love of gardening and proclivity to adopt stray animals.
Joan inspired us with her love of her grandchildren, Alison, Alex, William, Hannah and Olivia and great-grandchildren Jarrah and Florence. She had her own special relationships with our partners, Andrew Bennett, Kerri Carboon (née Munnerley) and Tom Buchan.
Joan passed away at Cabrini Hospital on Friday 18 April 2025, only hours after a huge win by her beloved Carlton Blues played on the TV in her room.
We are just beginning to understand how much we will miss our beautiful mother.
Anne Bennett, Neill and Isla Carboon
