The Language of Us
Doris Falidis-Nickolas’ poetry beautifully captures love, loss, and remembrance, offering comfort to those navigating grief.
Passed away peacefully at home, aged 92.
Forever loved and remembered by his wife Francine and daughters Christine and Susan.
Reunited with his beloved mother and brother Reggie.
~~~
On a Friday night in May,
You passed away peacefully at home.
After a six-month tough battle,
Throughout it you were never alone.
As the months, weeks and then days became worse,
Your family was there right by your side.
Until you closed your eyes and took your last breath,
And that is when our hearts broke and we cried.
We laid you to rest,
Alongside your dear Mother and Brother.
And it gives us some peace of mind and warmth,
Because we know you will all look after each other.
Passing away and leaving this earth,
Was never something you would fear.
Your fear was leaving your girls behind in this world,
And that you could not comfort us and be near.
You taught us how to love,
How to be kind to others and care.
You told us to be happy and always smile,
Even when you were no longer there.
We know that a life without you,
Will be painful, difficult and sad.
But we will try and live the life you would want us to,
And draw on the lovely and joyful times that we had.
You lived an amazing life,
Stories which will remain with us for our lifetime.
You were a simple man never asking for too much,
Just to be able to walk and see the sun shine.
Although you’re at peace now,
And you have left and gone away,
It is in our beautiful memories and our hearts,
That you will forever live on and stay.
And sometimes when I am alone,
I’ll hear your voice call out ‘Baby Sue’,
And I’ll reply, ‘I miss you so much Dad,
And I will always Love You’.
Love Your Susan xx
I wanted to write a poem,
About how life without you is sad.
Though that is not how you would want it,
For you believed life was a happy time to be had.
So here I will remember,
As you look down from above,
All that you taught me,
About living a life of love.
To wake up early,
Start your day with a smile.
Take pride in your dress,
Class never goes out of style.
To look around you,
At the sky, the trees, the sea.
How lucky we are to live in this world,
In all its beauty.
To say hello to a stranger,
The power of a kind word.
Take the time to listen,
Make others feel heard.
To ask the big questions,
Why were we put on this earth?
Listen to your heart,
And you will know your worth.
That life is a gift,
Never be afraid.
Treat everyone with kindness,
And you will be repaid.
Be brave to speak the truth,
Fight for what is fair.
Even when you are gone,
You will always be there.
That love lasts forever,
To love is to live.
Let it lead you, it is never wrong.
It’s the most precious thing we receive and give.
Your wisdom will guide me forward,
And I’ll remember how you often said to me,
“Everything will be alright, I promise you,
Just you wait and see”.
Thank you Dad
Love Christine
