Dedicated family man, intrepid conservationist, and lover of a fine drop. John lived generously and with irrepressible optimism.

His love for his wife Val was unparalleled- even in his twilight years he would proclaim it at every opportunity. He was a man who knew how to love unconditionally. This extended to children, grandchildren, friends, animals, and all of the beautiful ecologies that make up our world.

He lived to learn; his bookshelves groaned under all manner of specialised reference books, as well as general interest books on everything from the landscapes of Papua to the life cycle of cockroaches. He didn't preach but lived by example instead, teaching his family to delight in the minutiae of life and not get too caught up with the unimportant stuff

He was a fair and generous man, who will continue to live in the hearts of the many, many people whose lives he touched
