PIE, Denis Duncan 1932 ~ 2019 Denis Duncan Pie, aged 87, died peacefully on the 8th April 2019 at the Gold Coast, Queensland. Mr Pie was born in Brisbane, Australia on the 22nd August, 1932. He is preceded in death by his parents Bruce and Jean Pie as well as his brothers Bruce, David and Geoffrey Pie. Mr Pie is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sue Pie. Also survived by his sister Donagh and his brothers Jimmy and Dugald. He is also survived by his three children, Anthony Pie [Betsy] of Melbourne, Elizabeth Douglas [Drew] of Brisbane and Richard Pie [Mary] of Brisbane, and eight Grandchildren; Hunter Pie, Charles Pie, James Douglas, Kate Douglas, Eliza Douglas, Harrison Pie, Michael Pie, and Daniel Pie. Denis was educated at Toowoomba Grammar School, after which he obtained a degree in accountancy. Furthering his education, he travelled to England to study textile manufacturing, and also, to play a lot of golf. He returned to Brisbane to work in the family business Bruce Pie Industries. In the mid 1960 he moved to Sydney with his family to work with the biscuit company, Arnott s. He returned to Brisbane to start a career in real estate valuation and property consultancy. Denis also had a keen interest in politics. In the late 1970s, he moved to the Gold Coast to continue his valuation work and to become involved with the Gold Coast government. During the 1980s, he was the Chairman of the Gold Coast Visitors and Convention Bureau. This led to him becoming the Mayor of the Gold Coast between 1985 and 1988. In this role, he was instrumental in setting up the Gold Coast Arts Centre. He continued to work in the property industry until retirement. Denis enjoyed a happy and full upbringing with his six bothers and one sister, both at the Pie family home in the suburb of Aspley and at Surfer s Paradise. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and his dog [Apples].
