Adventurer, pioneer, globetrotter, free spirit, beloved father of Kerrin, Mandy, Rohan – Grandfather to Matthew, Katelyn, Mitchell, Jack and devoted husband of Jan (1940 - 1999), has sadly passed away at the age of 89 on Wednesday, 24 July.

Erich Schallmeiner migrated from Austria to Australia in the 1950s. He travelled to Papua New Guinea, where he met his future wife, Janice Cooke. In 1977, he moved with his family to Darwin and worked for the Department of Transport and Works until his retirement. He was instrumental in developing roadworks in remote communities throughout the Northern Territory, installing the automated lighthouse at Fish Reef, creating the Bottlewasher artificial reef, and numerous other projects.

Everyone who knew him loved him, and he will be greatly missed.
