Boats, numbers, travel and an appreciation for the beauty of life are just a few of the loves Roger Charles Williams enjoyed during his 82 years. Family friend Allison Hartman said Roger, who lost a 2.5 year battle with cancer on March 5, was an “amazing, powerful, and charismatic man”.
Roger was born in the UK on January 5, 1940, but it was in Sydney that he built his life and his career as a Chartered Accountant and company director of a successful accounting firm for more than 40 years.
“Roger was a gentleman and a man of honour, bringing a sense of purpose, love, and insight to all those people he touched in this world,” Allison said.
“I met Roger and his beautiful wife Marie-Luce over 15 years ago at the Mosman Rowers, and we all immediately struck a beautiful and deep friendship and shared many years of enjoying good food and wine together with an abundance of laughter at our homes in Balmoral.
“Roger and Marie-Luce loved to travel, and Roger loved the water and was an excellent sailor and had a passion for beautiful boats – and women – aka Marie-Luce...
“Their annual trips to France and the UK always included a joyous canal boat trip and Champagne.
“After a seven-year engagement, Roger and Marie-Luce were married on September 4, 2021 at their lovely home in Doonan, Queensland, where they retired to in late 2018.
Allison said that at the couple’s wedding Roger had told everyone that “it was about time we got married” as they had been together for more than twenty-five years.
They married on September 4, Marie-Luce’s birthday, and exactly seven years after they had celebrated their engagement at Club Mosman with Allison and a bunch of friends.
“Roger passed peacefully in the late evening of March 5, with Marie-Luce by his side holding his hand to his last breath, and now our wonderful "Dodge" is resting in peace, knowing of the love that was given to him,” Allison said.
